ULITA – an Archive of International Textiles

European Fragments Collection: introduction and archive handling session

European velvet fragment 2010.810

Join us for the first in our summer programme for University of Leeds staff and students, exploring the collections at ULITA – an Archive of International Textiles. Sessions are open to all staff and students at University of Leeds and offer an introduction to our collection holdings, along with the opportunity to handle items from the archive.

Our European Textile Fragments Collection contains over 300 small pieces of furnishing and dress fabrics thought to have been acquired for the original Textile Museum by Professor Roberts Beaumont and his colleagues during visits to the Continent in the early 20th century, possibly with the intention of creating sample books for student use. Many are 19th century figured velvets, damasks and French jacquard woven silks. The collection also includes a number of Italian braids, appliqués and fragments of embroideries, some dating from the 16th-17th century. There will be the opportunity to view pieces which have not yet been catalogued.
