A collection of approximately 40 samplers and associated sewing examples dating from the mid 18th century to the 1930s, several from pupils of Yorkshire schools. These were transferred from the disbanded History of Education collection within the University of Leeds, and were believed to have been collected in the early-mid 20th century.
Many samplers have names and ages of the young makers. Several have quotations which have been traced to original sources. Motifs include grand houses, people (including Adam and Eve), flowers and animals. Some pieces are sewn direct onto pierced paper, while various small samples of sewing techniques are card or portfolio mounted to be assessed for a qualification.
